1999 veröffentlichte die Band Ágætis Byrjun ("Ein guter Anfang"). Das Q Magazine bezeichnete Ágætis Byrjun als "die letzte große Platte des 20. Jahrhunderts". Am Ende des Jahres wurde es mit dem ersten US-Preis für künstlerische Leistungen in der Musik ausgezeichnet.
Ágætis byrjun war das zweite Album der Band aus Island und es wurde sowohl in kommerzieller als auch in kritischer Hinsicht zum Durchbruch für Sigur Rós.
